Dr. Gordon Neufeld is a developmental psychologist from Vancouver, Canada specialized in the development of children and teenagers. He received his Ph.D. in 1975 and has worked as a psychologist for 30 years. For over 20 years he taught developmental psychology and parent-child relationships at the University of British Columbia.  Additionally he worked in forensic psychology for several years where he specialized in the area of young delinquent.

He is the father of 5 children and 3 grand children, thus he puts his focus on the improvement of the educational system as well as in raising awareness about the importance of the role of parents in preparing children for life.

Website of Prof. Neufeld : http://www.gordonneufeld.com

The German version of this article features a German lecture from Prof. Neufeld which he held in Vienna in November 2011. In case you are capable of understanding German it is highly recommended to watch it - you might also pick up some of the original English in the background but there is a German voice over during the entire lecture.

Thus the English version of this article features an interview where Prof. Neufeld talks about the same topic as in his lecture but in the interview he only has 26 minutes so he can not cover the topic as thoroughly as in the lecture. Also I found the tone of Prof. Neufeld in this interview came across a bit like "we have to control our children" while in the lecture he very much focuses on "how can we help our children". So I found the lecture a lot more appealing than the interview.

This interview was conducted by Allan Gregg and produced for the Canadian TVO Organisation :

He also elaborates on the way our brain likes to solve problems but that the school system is geared towards feeding our brain with information without providing a practical application of this information. In this second video Götz Wittneben talks abuot his experiences with high gifted children and their parents. He sees a tragic tie between parents and gifted children : The children often act as a mirror for the parents and if the parents solve their problems often the problems of the children go away :
